Satya means “truth” and narayana means “the highest being” so satya narayana means the highest being who is an embodiment of truth. The satya narayana vratham & pooja are very popular in India. There is also a very famous temple for Sri SatyaNarayana Swamy at Annavaram, near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh where this vratam is performed every day. The satyanarayana vratham is a Hindu religious observance. It is a ritual performed by devotees on any major occasion like marriage, house-warming ceremony. It finds first mention in Skanda purana. The satya narayana puja performed on purnima (full moon) day of every month,Ekadasi (11th day after full moon (or) new moon), karthika purnima,vaisakha pournami, solar eclipse day, Sankranti.
The pooja performed on occasions like marriage, the purchase of new house, graduation, new job, will bear children to couples trying to start family.
The puja starts by a prayer to lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles that may occur as a result of incorrectly performing pooja. Chanting all names of lord Ganesha & offering Prasad (modak,sugar, coconut mixture, laddu) and showering of flower petals.
Another part of the prayer involves a prayer to the navagrahas. The nine important celestial beings in the universe. They consist of Surya (sun), Chandra (the moon), Angaraka(mars), Budha (mercury), Guru Bruhaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (venus), Sani (Saturn), Rahu ( the head of the demon snake), Ketu ( the tail of the demonsnake ).
